Zouk

The zouk is a musical kind of tropical music born around the beginning of the 80s, played in Martinique and Guadeloupe, popularized by the Kassav group, generally sung in Creole.

Origin :
The word zouk would come from mazouk, the creole mazurka.
It as should be known as a “party” says in Guadeloupe a “zouk”. We are going to “zouker” means dancing.

The music which was danced, in addition to Rhythm and Blues fashionable was “Cadence Rampa” and the “Compas”.

Description :
It is danced in couple, “collé-serré” (“stick-tight” means very closer), the man holds the woman by the size and the woman embraces her arms around the neck of her partner.

It is at the origin of the “beguine” or the rhythm of the carnival of the Guadeloupe, with the synthetizers of the funk, the guitars of the rock’n'roll and the soukouss, coppers of the salsa, with also of the influences of the kompa of Haiti.

Zouk Chiré (or Zouk Béton)
Means Zouk Fast is the real and first Zouk Style in the 80s, the rhythm looks like carnival rhythm, close to compa and merengue. It is more physical, more technical and is synonymous of having fun.
